Washing and Detailing
If you put a little extra work ahead of time, you’ll get more for your RV on trade-in day. Make sure your recreational vehicle is as clean and shiny as possible. Be sure to do the following:
- Wash the exterior
- Clean the tires and wheels
- Wash all windows (inside and out)
- Buff out small scratches, if able
- Clean out the storage areas
- Empty and clean all the kitchen appliances
- Wipe down the cabinets (inside and out)
- Clean sinks, and don’t forget the faucets
- Clean and disinfect all areas of the bathroom
- Shampoo carpets and wash all fabrics
- Sweep and mop hard surface floors
- Clean and air out the mattress, and replace it if odors can’t be removed
Quality Check
You need to inspect your RV to make sure everything is damage-free and working properly. We suggest following this checklist:
- Check awnings for stains, tears, and proper function
- Make sure the steps are sturdy and raise and lower properly
- Check tires for wear; make sure they’re at the proper pressure.
- Check all exterior lights
- Check interior lights
- Open all storage to check for cleanliness and working hinges
- Check all screens for tears
- Check the RV’s exterior for rust, large scratches, or other flaws
- Make sure jacks are working correctly
- Ensure all hoses and holding takes are working properly
- Test all outlets
- Test water pressure
Be sure you also collect all the paperwork that goes with your RV. This includes owner manuals, service paperwork, warranty records, user guides, and any other paperwork pertaining to the unit. Place it all in a folder or wrap with a rubber band and leave it in the RV.
During the Trade-In Process
While you won’t get full retail value, a trade-in could be more worthwhile than a sale. You can often work with a dealer to negotiate putting the value of your current RV toward a new one. However, it’s important to show you’ve taken proper care of the RV. The dealer will inspect the RV’s exterior. It will be best for you to be honest with them about the flaws but focus on all the positives of your RV.
Following this guide should put you in the best possible position for a trade-in. If you’re looking to trade in your RV, come see us at RV Station. We’ll be happy to discuss your RV’s value and show you a newer model if you’re in the market—stop by any one of our convenient locations in Texas.
